Established in 1519, this historic horse race is run on the third Thursday in March on roadside verges between Kiplingcotes and Londesborough Wold Farm - a distance of around four miles.
The race is generally accepted to be the oldest annual horse race in England.
No race took place in 2020 due to Covid lockdowns, although horses and riders did travel the route (within lockdown rules) to honour the essence of the event.
The 500th anniversary race took place in 2019.
A Facebook page 1) exists for current race information.
A website by John Slusar 2) contains comprehensive historical information about the race including details of winners all the way back to the 1500s. A copy of the rules of the race, set out in 1619, can also be found on that website.
A book was published in 1990 by Alison Ellerington entitled “The Kiplingcotes Derby: England's Oldest Horse Race”
